Academic Students Who use Braille

Tasks to be considered are: Writing, Reading, Calculation, Reference Materials, Recreational and Leisure Activities. Using the SETT or WATI materials, gather information on the following tasks for each student. Brainstorm with the Assistive Technology Assessment team to determine the most appropriate "tool" for educational success in each area. It might be important to remember that technology generally requires introductory skills, training, and continuing assessment to measure the success of each "tool". The following are possible suggestions, by far not the only suggestions.

Example "Tools"

Writing - Perkins braille writer, portable note taker, portable note taker with refreshable braille, slate and stylus, computer with talking word processor (Intellitalk or Write outloud), computer with screen reading software (Jaws), computer with braille translation software (Duxbury), word predicition software (CoWriter).

Reading - braille text books and handouts, refreshable braille displays, etext, digital talking books (www.rfbd.org), computer screen reading software (Jaws).

Calculation - Orion talking calculator (APH), braille graph paper, tiger braille embosser, Accessible Graphing Calculator.

Reference Materials - digital talking books, American Printing House materials, encyclopedia's online.

Recreational and Leisure Activities - computer games, digital talking books, note taker games.
