Academic Students Who are Low Vision

Tasks to be considered are: Writing, Reading, Calculation, Reference Materials, Recreational and Leisure Activities. Using the SETT or WATI materials, gather information on the following tasks for each student. Brainstorm with the Assistive Technology Assessment team to determine the most appropriate "tool" for educational success in each area. It might be important to remember that technology generally requires introductory skills, training, and continuing assessment to measure the success of each "tool". The following are possible suggestions, by far not the only suggestions.

Example "Tools"

Writing - portable note taker, computer with talking word processor (Intellitalk or Write outloud), computer with screen enlargement software (ZoomText), computer using built in accessibility features in the OS, word predicition software (CoWriter).

Calulation - large print calculator, bold lined graph paper.

Reading - large print text books and handouts, etext, digital talking books (www.rfbd.org), computer screen enlargement software (ZoomText).

Reference Materials - digital talking books, American Printing House materials, encyclopedias online.

Recreational and Leisure Activities - computer games, digital talking books, note taker games.
